Olivier Pasquet is a composer, music producer, and visual artist. His generative pieces are spatialised and contextualised within rationalist theory-fiction. His work is performed or showcased worldwide at various festivals, museums, and often site-specific venues. In recent times, he has been crafting highly rhythmic and spatialized compositions, intertwining voice with architectural elements that are interesting acoustically, visually, and socially. After completing his composition studies in Cambridge, he worked in several popular music studios and spent a short period at INA-GRM. He obtained his PhD in musical composition and non-standard architecture from Huddersfield University. He has collaborated with a wide variety of artists, primarily at IRCAM-Centre Pompidou, for decades. Additionally, he was an artistic researcher at Tokyo University, Keio University, Buffalo University, and lately the Institute for Computer Music at Zurich University of the Arts. Pasquet has worked as a consultant at Sony CSL, Ableton, and contributed to the artistic machine-learning European Flucoma research project. Currently, he serves as a faculty member in computational arts at Goldsmiths, University of London.
The Composition Area of the Emory Department of Music presents BURST LIQUIDITY: 2 concerts of IMMERSIVE AUDIO in the Emory Planetarium featuring resident artist OLIVIER PASQUET (Berlin, DE).
The concerts are hosted by the Emory Department of Physics, in their beautiful Planetarium –a magical space in the Math and Science Building. Sitting underneath twinkling stars, the audience will be surrounded by a 16-speaker multichannel audio system. The lights will dim, stars alight, and sounds will begin….
The first Planetarium concert (Friday Oct 9 8pm) features his multichannel electronic composition Burst Liquidity. In the composer’s words: Generative spatialised electronic performance inspired by the collision of cosmic signals and hypertrading markets. Infinitesimal pulses and sudden surges trace the invisible source of liquidity bursts: rapid algorithmic orders, flashes of buying and selling, and fast radio bursts arriving from deep space. The rest of the concert will feature immersive works by five Atlanta composers: Jeff Albert (GaTech), Emily Koh (UGA), Adam Mirza (Emory Music), Alexandria Smith (GaTech), and Katherine Young (Emory Music)
For the second concert (Saturday Oct 10 8pm) Pasquet will be joined by Atlanta new music ensemble Bent Frequency Duo Project (Jan Berry Baker - saxophones, Stuart Gerber - percussion). Bent Frequency will present a set of acoustic and electronic pieces from their repertoire, followed by an extended improvisation “in-the-round” with Pasquet that explores the resonances and intersections of immersive acoustic and electronic sound.
These concerts culminate Pasquet’s week-long residency in Atlanta, which includes workshops with Emory faculty and students, a lecture at Georgia Tech, and a performance on Oct 4 on the Monday Night Creative Music Series at Eyedrum Art and Music Gallery.
